The Indian stock market faced a sharp downturn on Friday as both the Sensex and the Nifty50 indices erased their early gains and moved into negative territory. The decline was driven by growing unease over geopolitical tensions, which has intensified concerns about rising inflation and its potential impact on economic growth.

By mid-morning trading, the Sensex was down 383.32 points, or 0.52 percent, settling at 72,866.07. Meanwhile, the Nifty50 slipped below the 22,500 mark, reflecting cautious investor sentiment. Earlier, the Sensex had shown strength, but it could not sustain the momentum as fears related to inflationary pressures took center stage.

Market capitalization across BSE-listed companies fell significantly, shedding nearly ₹9.7 trillion to reach ₹449.60 trillion from the previous close of ₹459.26 trillion. This massive erosion in market value underscores the impact of the selloff on investor wealth.

Volatility in the market also surged, with the India VIX index jumping over 7 percent to 16.41. The VIX, often dubbed the 'fear gauge,' measures expected near-term volatility in the market. A rise in this index signals growing nervousness among traders and suggests that fluctuations could persist in the short term.

Sector-wise, the IT segment stood out as a relative bright spot amid the widespread declines. The Nifty IT index rose by more than 2 percent, buoyed by strong performances from major companies such as TCS, Infosys, and HCL Technologies, whose shares climbed between 2 and 4 percent. The resilience of IT stocks comes despite the broader market retreat and highlights their status as defensive plays during periods of uncertainty.

Conversely, other sectors showed weakness. Industrial and infrastructure stocks like Tata Steel fell by 1.3 percent, leading the losses on the Sensex. Adani Ports and IndiGo were also among the prominent decliners, reflecting cautious investor outlook on these segments.

The small and midcap segments lagged behind the benchmark Nifty50. The Nifty Midcap index dropped by 1.04 percent, while the Nifty Smallcap 100 fell by 1.59 percent. This underperformance indicates that investors favored larger, more stable firms over smaller, potentially riskier companies amid the unsettled environment.

On the corporate front, Cyient’s shares surged nearly 11 percent to a 52-week high of ₹1,268 on the NSE following strong quarterly results. The company reported an 11.9 percent rise in profit after tax (PAT) to ₹153 crore for the second quarter, driven by growth in its digital, engineering, and technology businesses. This positive earnings report helped Cyient buck the overall market trend.

In contrast, Swiggy’s stock dropped almost 10 percent, closing at ₹191 on the NSE after the company posted a consolidated net loss of ₹922 crore in Q2FY27. The significant loss weighed heavily on investor confidence in the food delivery sector, which continues to face profitability challenges despite revenue growth.

The current market movements reflect the broader global concerns about inflation, supply chain disruptions, and geopolitical conflicts that are affecting investor sentiment worldwide. Indian markets, which had shown resilience in recent months, are now reacting to these external pressures, leading to increased volatility and cautious trading.

Investors are closely watching upcoming economic data and central bank policies for signals on how inflation and interest rates will evolve. Meanwhile, sectors like IT that benefit from global demand and have stable earnings remain preferred choices for those seeking shelter from the turbulence.

As the trading week concludes, market participants are likely to remain vigilant, balancing optimism from strong earnings in certain companies against the risks posed by geopolitical events and inflation concerns.
