Rajasthan Govt Intensifies Drive Against GST Evasion and Fraudulent ITC Claims

The Commercial Tax Department of the Rajasthan government has initiated a comprehensive enforcement campaign aimed at addressing revenue losses caused by GST evasion, improper input tax credit (ITC) claims, and other related tax violations. This operation targets fraudulent activities including the trading of goods without proper invoices and the concealment of actual business turnover, according to a senior official involved in the drive.

Active for over two months, the initiative has seen departmental teams conduct detailed surveys and investigations at various business locations spanning Jaipur, Ajmer, Beawar, Didwana-Kuchaman, Khairthal-Tijara, and Phalodi. These efforts have uncovered significant inconsistencies pointing to tax irregularities estimated at around ₹2.85 crore.

During these investigations, many taxpayers opted to voluntarily deposit or reverse amounts in question, totaling approximately ₹2.51 crore. This highlights the effectiveness of the campaign in encouraging compliance alongside enforcement actions.

One notable case involved Stubborn Resorts Private Limited located in Jhotwara, Jaipur. On October 12, officials scrutinized the ITC claimed for resort construction and found it to be ineligible. The company subsequently reversed an ITC amount of ₹55.26 lakh. Following this, on October 13, a similar operation at AGRS Ventures LLP in Jaipur's C-Scheme revealed nearly ₹1 crore in ineligible ITC related to immovable property construction. The business reversed ₹99.76 lakh after the inquiry.

In Ajmer, the department took action against Assam Timber and Plywood situated on Pushkar Road. Authorities suspected the business of selling goods without proper tax invoices and concealing part of its transactions. Physical stock verification was carried out, and questionable documents were seized, with preliminary estimates suggesting tax discrepancies amounting to around ₹8 lakh.

Another case under scrutiny involves K C Agencies in Kaisarganj, Ajmer. Officials allege that the company violated provisions of the GST composition scheme by selling goods without issuing bills of supply and hiding its actual turnover. This points to attempts to avoid paying appropriate taxes under the simplified scheme designed for small businesses.

The Rajasthan Commercial Tax Department has emphasized that these actions reflect only a portion of the ongoing efforts to clamp down on GST-related violations. The department plans to continue with similar drives across the state to ensure compliance and safeguard government revenue.

GST, or Goods and Services Tax, is a critical source of revenue for both state and central governments in India. It replaced a complex array of indirect taxes with a unified tax structure, aiming to improve tax collection efficiency and reduce evasion. However, fraudulent claims of ITC and underreporting of turnover have posed challenges for tax authorities nationwide.

Rajasthan's proactive approach to identifying and rectifying these issues aligns with broader national efforts to tighten GST compliance. The state's campaign underscores the importance of regular audits, field inspections, and cooperation from taxpayers to maintain a fair tax system.

By addressing these irregularities, the government hopes to bolster its revenue base and promote greater transparency within business operations. Such enforcement drives also serve as a deterrent against tax evasion and encourage businesses to adhere strictly to GST regulations.

As the campaign progresses, further updates on investigations and recoveries are expected. The department continues to urge taxpayers to comply fully with GST laws and promptly rectify any discrepancies to avoid penalties or legal action.
