Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman Leads 30th FSDC Meeting with Regulators

On October 23, 2026, Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman convened the 30th meeting of the Financial Stability and Development Council (FSDC) in New Delhi. The gathering brought together key figures from India's financial ecosystem, including the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) Governor, heads of various financial regulatory bodies, and senior government officers.

The Ministry of Finance confirmed the event through a social media update, highlighting the presence of the Union Minister for Finance and Corporate Affairs alongside top officials from the financial sector. The meeting serves as an important forum for discussing issues that impact the country's financial system and its development trajectory.

Attendees included not only the RBI Governor but also secretaries from the Department of Economic Affairs, Department of Revenue, and Department of Financial Services. Additionally, the Chief Economic Adviser to the Government of India was present, alongside chairpersons from major financial regulators such as the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI), Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority of India (IRDAI), International Financial Services Centres Authority (IFSCA), Pension Fund Regulatory and Development Authority (PFRDA), and the Insolvency and Bankruptcy Board of India (IBBI).

In a notable inclusion, senior representatives from the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) and the Indian Computer Emergency Response Team (CERT-In) also participated. Their involvement underscores the growing importance of cybersecurity and digital infrastructure in the financial sector's stability and operational resilience.

The FSDC acts as the highest government-level platform dedicated to monitoring and promoting financial stability and sector development. Established in 2010, the council focuses on coordinating among various financial regulators to ensure a cohesive approach to challenges facing the economy. Its responsibilities extend to promoting financial literacy, advancing financial inclusion, and exercising macroprudential oversight, particularly in relation to large financial conglomerates that play a significant role in the economy.

Chaired by the Union Finance Minister, the council's membership includes the RBI Governor and senior officials from the Ministry of Finance, along with leaders of key regulatory institutions. The FSDC and its subcommittee, led by the RBI Governor, regularly review proposals submitted by members concerning financial stability and development issues. They then recommend necessary actions to address these concerns effectively.

This meeting exemplifies the collaborative effort between government entities and regulatory bodies to maintain a stable financial environment in India. The inclusion of CERT-In representatives reflects a recognition of the critical role cybersecurity now plays in safeguarding financial systems amid increasing digitalization.

As India’s financial sector continues to evolve, forums like the FSDC are essential for ensuring that regulatory frameworks keep pace with new developments. By fostering coordination and dialogue among diverse stakeholders, the council aims to strengthen the foundation for sustained economic growth and stability.

The 30th FSDC meeting highlights the government’s ongoing commitment to closely monitor and support the financial sector’s health, addressing emerging risks and promoting inclusive growth across the economy.
