JPMorgan Highlights Rare Opportunity in High-Quality Fixed Income Market
J.P. Morgan Asset Management is urging investors to reconsider fixed income securities, highlighting what it describes as a rare and compelling opportunity in high-quality bonds. Priya Misra, a portfolio manager at the firm, spoke this week about the potential for attractive returns without the need to compromise on credit quality.
In an interview on CNBC's "ETF Edge," Misra emphasized that investors can now earn yields as high as 6.5% by investing in the debt of top-tier companies. She noted, "You can actually take credit risk in the highest quality companies and still get [a] 6.5% [yield]. So, you actually don't have to go down in credit [quality]." This presents a chance for investors to access income-generating assets while maintaining relatively low credit risk.
Misra also pointed out that fixed income offers diversification benefits, especially for those concerned about heavy exposure to artificial intelligence stocks, which have dominated recent market gains. "There's a huge AI exposure," she said. "What fixed income gives you is this diversified set of returns. It's not just an AI trade or a tech trade. You have the Treasury trade. You have credit outside of AI." This diversification can help balance portfolios amid concentrated equity market risks.
She manages the JPMorgan Core Plus Bond Fund ETF (ticker: JCPB), which holds nearly $16 billion in assets as of August 31. The fund’s portfolio consists mainly of investment-grade bonds, with over 75% of holdings rated BBB or higher. Recently, the fund has adjusted its positioning by increasing some exposure to lower-rated bonds, including double-B and single-B credits, responding to a widening in high-yield spreads. Misra also mentioned that the fund has begun lengthening its duration, anticipating that interest rate hikes may be nearing their end.
Despite these strategic moves, the JPMorgan Core Plus Bond Fund ETF has declined by more than 5% this year through Friday’s close, reflecting the challenges in the bond market amid rising rates. Misra stressed the importance of careful security selection, noting, "You want to be looking bond by bond and sort of sector by sector to see where the macro and you have to do the bottom up as well to make sure that companies are not over levered." She also expressed caution about the impact of higher interest rates on sectors like housing, which could affect credit conditions.
Another voice in the fixed income space, Joanna Gallegos, co-founder of BondBloxx, echoed the view that the current yields across debt markets are historically attractive. She encouraged investors to consider adding corporate debt to their portfolios, highlighting the income potential as a counterbalance to equity market volatility. "It's really in the investor's best interest to start looking at the income that's back in fixed income. It can offset the volatility in your portfolio," Gallegos said during the same CNBC interview.
Gallegos pointed to stable and elevated base interest rates along with strong corporate fundamentals and ongoing economic growth as reasons for optimism about credit markets. She remarked, "The fundamentals of these corporations are so strong, and the economy continues to grow. We really think that's being lost in the narrative around Treasury rates." BondBloxx offers several fixed-income ETFs focusing on various sectors such as Treasury securities, corporate bonds, private credit, and emerging markets.
One of BondBloxx’s ETFs, the Private Credit CLO ETF (ticker: PCMM), has experienced a modest decline of 0.6% this year through Friday's close, according to FactSet data. This performance further illustrates the nuanced environment investors face in fixed income, where yield opportunities coexist with interest rate and credit risks.
The renewed interest in high-quality fixed income comes amidst a broader backdrop of market uncertainty and shifting investor priorities. With equity valuations stretched in certain sectors, especially technology and AI-related stocks, fixed income provides an alternative source of yield and diversification. Investors seeking steady income and risk management may find the current fixed income landscape particularly worth exploring.
In summary, JPMorgan and BondBloxx highlight that despite recent market volatility, fixed income remains a viable and potentially rewarding component of a diversified investment portfolio. By focusing on quality credits and carefully managing duration and credit exposure, investors can tap into yields not seen in many years without compromising on creditworthiness.
