DMart Shares Drop to New 52-Week Low Following Q2 Results
Avenue Supermarts, the parent company of the DMart retail chain, has seen its stock decline sharply, hitting a new 52-week low during intraday trading on Wednesday. The share price dropped to ₹3,345.90, marking a continuation of losses over the past several sessions following the release of its second quarter financial results.
In the last two trading days, DMart shares fell by nearly 5 percent, and over the span of four consecutive sessions, the stock has lost approximately 8 percent. For the month of October alone, the stock has declined by 12 percent, a steep fall compared to the Nifty index, which has decreased by a modest 0.5 percent during the same period.
The stock price had previously reached a 52-week high of ₹4,644 on April 17, 2026, and an all-time record of ₹5,900 in October 2021. Current valuations are significantly lower, trading roughly 28 percent below the 52-week peak and down 43.2 percent from the historic high. Technical analysis reveals that DMart’s shares are now approaching their 100-month moving average, a level not seen before. This average currently stands near ₹3,329, signaling a key technical support point.
By 11:30 AM on Tuesday, DMart shares were trading marginally down by 0.3 percent at ₹3,350, with a trading volume of about 220,000 shares on the National Stock Exchange (NSE).
Q2 Financial Performance
Avenue Supermarts posted a net profit of ₹803.60 crore for the quarter ending September 2026, representing a 7.6 percent increase compared to ₹746.55 crore in the same period the previous year. Revenue from operations rose 18.4 percent year-on-year to ₹19,206.18 crore, up from ₹16,218.78 crore reported in Q2FY26.
Despite these yearly gains, the quarter-on-quarter performance showed some signs of weakening. Net profit declined by 14.1 percent compared to ₹935.77 crore reported in the first quarter of FY27, although revenue did increase slightly by 4.7 percent sequentially.
Market Reaction and Analyst Views
Following the earnings announcement, brokerage firms offered differing perspectives on DMart's outlook. Elara Capital retained an 'Accumulate' rating, signaling cautious optimism. They highlighted that the pace of store expansion remains consistent, with 18 new stores opened in the first half of FY27. This represents about 20 percent of their full-year estimate of 90 store openings, aligning with historical trends.
However, Elara Capital reduced their earnings per share projections for FY28 and FY29 by 4 to 5 percent and lowered their target price from ₹4,700 to ₹4,200, reflecting concerns about margin pressures and cost inflation.
On the other hand, PL Capital downgraded their rating from 'Hold' to 'Reduce'. They pointed out ongoing challenges with gross margins, which have come under strain as DMart struggles to pass on increased commodity costs to customers. The competitive environment, especially from quick commerce players, continues to limit pricing power, and no immediate relief appears forthcoming.
These mixed signals from analysts underscore the balancing act DMart faces between expanding its footprint and managing profitability amid rising input costs and fierce competition.
Context and Industry Trends
DMart operates in India's highly competitive retail market, where consumer demand and cost pressures can fluctuate rapidly. Its business model, based on offering value pricing and efficient operations, has helped it grow steadily over the years. However, rising commodity prices and increasing competition from both organized and online retailers have complicated the outlook for margins.
Investors will be watching closely how Avenue Supermarts navigates these challenges while continuing to expand its store network. The stock’s recent slide reflects both concerns over short-term earnings pressures and broader uncertainties in the retail sector.
As the retail industry evolves, companies like DMart must balance growth ambitions with cost management to sustain investor confidence and maintain competitive positioning.
