Barclays, the British banking giant, announced a significant workforce reduction as part of its strategy to improve efficiency through artificial intelligence. The lender intends to eliminate 5,000 jobs, representing approximately 5% of its total staff, reflecting a structural effort to streamline operations and redirect resources towards technology investments.

This move was revealed in Barclays' third-quarter earnings report released on Thursday. The bank described the job cuts as a measure to "structurally reduce the cost base to generate capacity for investment." The majority of the reductions, about 60%, will affect support functions, including roles such as developers. The company pointed to "organisational simplification and technology change efficiency driven by AI" as key factors behind this decision.

By 8:50 a.m. in London, shortly after markets opened, Barclays shares had dropped nearly 1%, reflecting investor reaction to the announcement. The cost-cutting effort comes amid a broader push in the financial sector to embrace automation and artificial intelligence to boost productivity and reduce expenses.

Despite the planned layoffs, Barclays reported a 12% increase in pre-tax profit for the third quarter compared to the previous year, reaching £2.3 billion ($3.1 billion). This result aligned with forecasts compiled by the London Stock Exchange Group (LSEG). However, group income for the period was £7.4 billion, slightly below analysts' expectations of £7.61 billion.

Net interest income, a key revenue source for banks, remained relatively flat at £3.91 billion during the quarter. The bank’s Common Equity Tier 1 (CET1) capital ratio, which measures financial strength and resilience, decreased marginally to 14.2% from 14.3% at the end of the second quarter. Meanwhile, return on tangible equity declined from 16.1% to 11.7%, indicating some pressure on profitability despite the rise in pre-tax earnings.

The decision to reduce staff through AI-driven efficiency gains reflects a growing trend in the banking industry. Financial institutions worldwide are increasingly investing in technology to automate routine tasks, enhance customer service, and tighten control over operational costs. Barclays’ approach highlights how major lenders are balancing cost management with the need to invest in digital transformation.

Barclays operates in a competitive and rapidly evolving market where innovation and efficiency have become critical. The bank has been actively pursuing digital initiatives to remain competitive while adapting to changing customer expectations and regulatory demands. This latest announcement signals a strategic shift to leverage AI not only as a tool for product and service enhancement but also as a means to reshape internal processes and workforce structure.

As Barclays embarks on this cost-reduction path, the banking sector will be closely watching how these changes impact the company’s long-term growth and operational resilience. With AI playing a central role, the future of banking jobs and workflows is likely to continue evolving, with implications for employees, customers, and shareholders alike.
