Air India Extends Suspension of Riyadh and Dammam Flights Until November 7
Air India and its low-cost subsidiary Air India Express have prolonged the suspension of their flight operations to Saudi Arabian cities Riyadh and Dammam until November 7, 2026. Meanwhile, flights to Jeddah will continue to be halted until October 31, 2026. This extension follows earlier cancellations that were initially set to last until October 24.
The decision to extend the suspension comes amid rising geopolitical tensions in the Gulf region and recent attacks targeting airports in Saudi Arabia. These developments have led multiple Indian carriers to adjust their international schedules for Saudi destinations as a precautionary measure.
In a statement shared on its official social media platform X, Air India confirmed, "In view of the prevailing situation in the region, Air India and Air India Express flights to and from Riyadh and Dammam will remain suspended until 7 November 2026, while services to and from Jeddah will remain suspended until 31 October 2026." The airline further announced flexible options for affected passengers, allowing those with confirmed tickets issued on or before October 24 to either rebook their travel dates or request a full refund if they choose to cancel their bookings.
Other Indian airlines have also taken similar steps. IndiGo, one of India's largest private carriers, has canceled its flights to Saudi Arabian cities following a thorough evaluation of the security situation. Akasa Air, another private airline, has joined the list of carriers suspending service to these destinations. These moves reflect growing concerns about passenger safety and operational challenges in areas experiencing instability.
Saudi Arabia is a significant destination for Indian travelers, including a large number of expatriate workers and pilgrims. Air connectivity between India and key Saudi cities such as Riyadh, Dammam, and Jeddah plays a vital role in facilitating business, tourism, and religious travel. The suspension of flights disrupts this critical link, impacting thousands of passengers and the wider airline industry.
The current geopolitical climate in the Gulf has been tense due to conflicts and security threats affecting civil aviation. Airlines worldwide often respond to such situations by suspending or rerouting flights to safeguard passengers and crew. For Indian carriers, the safety of their customers remains paramount amid these uncertainties.
Travelers planning trips to Saudi Arabia are advised to stay in close contact with their airlines for updates and to explore alternate arrangements if necessary. Airlines typically offer flexible policies during such disruptions to accommodate affected passengers.
Looking ahead, resumption of flights will likely depend on the stabilization of the regional situation and assurances of security from relevant authorities. Airlines continue to monitor developments closely and will adjust schedules accordingly to ensure safe and efficient operations.
This episode highlights the vulnerability of international air travel to geopolitical events and the need for dynamic response strategies by airlines. It also underscores the importance of communication between carriers and passengers during times of disruption.
