Robinhood Launches Weekend Trading and New Features for US Stocks

Robinhood, a prominent US-based online brokerage platform, announced a significant expansion of its trading hours by enabling users to trade select US stocks and exchange-traded funds (ETFs) throughout the weekend. This development marks a notable shift in the US equities market as the platform adapts to increasing demand for extended trading access and greater flexibility.

Traditionally, American stock exchanges such as the New York Stock Exchange and Nasdaq have operated from 9:30 am to 4 pm Eastern Time on weekdays. However, the landscape is evolving, with exchanges planning to lengthen trading sessions to nearly 23 hours a day during the week. Nasdaq, for example, intends to offer new trading windows from 9 pm to 4 am.

Robinhood has already provided round-the-clock trading during weekdays since early 2023. Now, by extending trading to weekends, the platform is tapping into an underserved market segment, particularly appealing to international investors and traders who are active outside standard US market hours. According to Robinhood’s data, about 25 percent of its daily trading volume on busy days happens outside the traditional trading hours, highlighting a growing appetite for more flexible market access.

Abhishek Fatehpuria, Robinhood’s vice president of product management, told Reuters, "Our focus this year is making Robinhood the best place for active traders by giving them the tools that are typically reserved for hedge funds, quants and a lot of big active trading firms." This statement underscores the company’s commitment to democratizing advanced trading capabilities.

The platform’s move comes amid broader industry changes. Regulatory bodies like the US Securities and Exchange Commission have recognized the benefits of extended trading hours. SEC Chair Paul Atkins recently remarked on the risks of waiting until official market openings to react to breaking news, suggesting that extended access could reduce missed opportunities and lower risk for investors.

Alongside weekend trading, Robinhood is unveiling several new features designed to enhance the user experience:

  • Weekend trading for select US stocks and ETFs: Initially, Robinhood will offer weekend trading on a curated list of securities. This feature is being developed with the support of Bruce ATS, a firm specializing in overnight trading infrastructure, and awaits final regulatory approval.
  • Earnings-related betting: Through a partnership with the derivatives exchange Cboe, Robinhood will enable users to place wagers on whether companies meet or exceed earnings targets or specific revenue milestones. This addition introduces a new way for traders to engage with corporate performance beyond conventional stock price movements.
  • Perpetual futures trading: Eligible US customers will gain access to perpetual futures contracts, which differ from traditional futures by having no expiration date. These instruments offer new strategic options for traders looking to manage risk or speculate.
  • AI trading agents: Users will soon be able to create artificial intelligence-driven agents within the Robinhood app. These agents can execute trades autonomously, providing active traders with sophisticated tools once exclusive to professional firms.
  • Expanded social platform: Building on the success of its beta launch, Robinhood plans to roll out a social networking feature that resembles Reddit’s WallStreetBets community. This platform allows users to share insights, strategies, and market commentary, fostering engagement and community-driven information exchange.

Robinhood’s expansion reflects a broader trend in the financial markets toward greater accessibility and innovation. As technology advances and investor preferences shift, platforms are increasingly offering services that break free from traditional trading constraints. This evolution could help attract a more diverse group of market participants while providing existing traders with more tools and opportunities.

As Robinhood continues to introduce these features, the platform aims to solidify its position among active traders seeking flexibility, sophisticated tools, and community engagement. The upcoming changes are expected to reshape how and when retail investors participate in the US stock market.
