Trump Considers Ousting Kimberly Guilfoyle as U.S. Ambassador to Greece
President Donald Trump revealed on Monday that he is displeased with Kimberly Guilfoyle, the U.S. ambassador to Greece, and is contemplating whether to remove her from the post. The president’s remarks came after a series of investigative reports published by The Wall Street Journal that raised concerns about Guilfoyle’s actions both prior to and during her tenure as ambassador.
Speaking at the White House, Trump was asked by a reporter if he was considering firing Guilfoyle. He responded, "Well, we're looking at it," adding plainly, "Yeah, we're not happy." This public statement marks a rare moment of criticism from the president toward an ambassador he personally appointed.
Kimberly Guilfoyle, a former Fox News host, was nominated as ambassador to Greece after her romantic relationship with Donald Trump Jr., the president’s eldest son, ended. Her appointment drew attention due to her high-profile media career and close ties to the Trump family.
The scrutiny intensified after The Wall Street Journal published a series of articles beginning on September 25. One report, titled "The Mystery Man Shadowing Kimberly Guilfoyle as She Pushes Deals Across Europe," described her efforts to encourage U.S. allies in Eastern Europe to purchase billions of dollars worth of American natural gas. The article detailed how Guilfoyle advocated for these countries to engage with Aktor Group, a Greek construction company newly involved in the gas sector. This firm had partnered with a Greek state-backed energy company to import liquefied natural gas from the United States.
According to the Journal, Guilfoyle frequently traveled with Christos Marafatsos, a prominent lobbyist for Aktor Group. He accompanied her to meetings at her ambassadorial residence and official government sessions across the region, an unusual practice for a private individual and a diplomatic representative.
Further reports published on October 7 raised questions about Guilfoyle’s financial dealings. The Journal claimed that in July 2025, prior to her Senate confirmation hearing, she asked a Trump donor named Eric Deters for $100,000 to cover what she described as an American Express bill. Guilfoyle’s lawyer countered this by stating that the money was owed to her for travel and support related to paid speaking engagements and events predating her ambassadorial nomination.
On October 14, The Wall Street Journal reported allegations that during the January 2026 World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, Guilfoyle boasted about her connections to two wealthy Greek businessmen who reportedly financed her extravagant international travel.
In response to these claims, Guilfoyle’s attorneys issued a statement denying any misconduct. They emphasized that the funds requested from the Trump donor were payments for legitimate services, including public appearances and speeches. Regarding her use of private planes for travel, her legal team asserted that she always sought and followed guidance from the U.S. State Department and adhered strictly to travel regulations.
These developments come at a time when diplomatic appointments and conduct are under close examination amid increasing public interest and media scrutiny. The role of U.S. ambassadors involves representing American interests abroad with integrity, and any perceived improprieties can carry significant consequences for bilateral relations and domestic politics.
Kimberly Guilfoyle’s case highlights the challenges that can arise when political appointees with media backgrounds transition into diplomatic positions. It also illustrates the complex interplay between personal relationships, political influence, and official responsibilities within the U.S. government structure.
As the White House considers the future of Guilfoyle’s ambassadorship, observers will be watching closely how these allegations are addressed and what impact they might have on U.S.-Greece relations. The situation remains fluid as both the administration and Guilfoyle’s representatives respond to ongoing reports and public scrutiny.
