Tata Sons IPO: Shareholders Could See Stakes Worth Crores Each
Tata Sons Private Limited is preparing to enter the public markets following a board decision to approve its listing. Market analysts are currently evaluating the implications for existing shareholders and the potential value of their stakes once Tata Sons shares debut on Indian stock exchanges.
The company has approximately 404,000 shares outstanding. Of these, the largest portions are held by philanthropic trusts linked to the Tata Group. Sir Dorabji Tata Trust owns about 113,067 shares, representing nearly 28% of the total equity. Close behind, Sir Ratan Tata Trust holds 95,211 shares, which account for roughly 23.5% of the company’s share capital. Among individuals, Jimmy Naval Tata is the most prominent shareholder, possessing 3,262 shares, or 0.81% of the total shares.
Seema Srivastava, Senior Research Analyst at SMC Global Securities, estimates Tata Sons’ valuation could reach ₹12 lakh crore once listed. She noted that the exact valuation is difficult to pinpoint at this stage but the figure is supported by recent market reports. Based on the total number of shares, this valuation implies a market price of almost ₹2.97 crore per share.
This means even owning a single Tata Sons share could make an investor a crorepati. If these shares are listed at the predicted price, small shareholders stand to gain significantly from the public offering.
Looking closer at individual holdings, Jimmy Naval Tata’s 3,262 shares could translate into a stake worth nearly ₹9,688 crore. Noel Tata’s 2,055 shares would be valued at over ₹6,100 crore, while Simone Tata’s 2,011 shares might be worth close to ₹5,972 crore. Additionally, Jimmy Tata’s 157 shares would be worth more than ₹466 crore, and Piloo Tata’s 487 shares could amount to approximately ₹1,446 crore. Ratan Tata’s holding of 3,368 shares would exceed ₹10,000 crore in value.
The Tata Group’s decision to list Tata Sons marks a significant milestone for the conglomerate, which has historically operated as a private holding company with a diverse portfolio spanning steel, automobiles, IT services, consumer goods, and more. The public offering is expected to bring greater transparency and provide an opportunity for investors to participate in one of India’s most well-known corporate houses.
This move also fits into a broader trend of large Indian conglomerates exploring public listings to unlock value and raise capital. Given Tata Sons’ central role as the promoter entity of the Tata Group, its market debut will be closely watched by investors and industry observers alike.
While the projected valuation and share price are based on current estimates and market expectations, investors are advised to consult with financial experts before making investment decisions related to the IPO.
