Nifty Hits Five-Month Low as Banks and NBFCs Lead Market Drop
The National Stock Exchange's Nifty index closed at its lowest point in over five months on Thursday, as broad selling pressure in banking and non-banking financial companies combined with rising oil prices dampened investor enthusiasm. The Nifty 50 index dropped by 383.7 points, or 1.64 percent, finishing the day at 23,063.1. Meanwhile, the BSE Sensex declined by 1,247.7 points, or 1.67 percent, settling at 73,580.54.
This marked the steepest single-day loss for the Nifty since early July, when it had fallen more sharply by 2.1 percent. The market weakness was driven by concerns around financial sector earnings and regulatory changes, alongside external factors such as higher crude oil costs and global bond yield fluctuations.
In the midst of the decline, Sanofi Healthcare India executed a significant block transaction on the NSE, acquiring 3.5 million shares from Hoechst GmbH for ₹1,068.2 crore. This deal, representing a 15.2 percent stake, was an inter-promoter transfer, meaning ownership shifted between promoter groups without impacting public shareholding or control.
PB Fintech, the parent company of PolicyBazaar, experienced a sharp share price drop of 36 percent during trading. HDFC Mutual Fund purchased 2.5 million shares valued at ₹320.6 crore in a block deal at ₹1,282.3 per share, amounting to a 0.54 percent stake. The stock faced selling pressure amid investor concerns over proposed regulatory changes by the Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority of India (IRDAI) concerning commissions paid to insurers.
Top decliners on the day included HDFC Life Insurance Company, Bajaj Finance, Axis Bank, and Bajaj Finserv, all of which fell between 4.5 and 6.2 percent. Despite the Nifty's presence on the NSE, the total market capitalization of companies listed on the BSE declined by ₹2.7 trillion, or half a percent.
Only three out of the 50 Nifty stocks managed to close higher on the session, reflecting the widespread nature of the selloff. Brent crude oil futures for November delivery rose by 1.8 percent to $104.9 per barrel during the evening session, while the US 10-year Treasury yield climbed to 5.12 percent, adding to the adverse sentiment.
Sunny Agrawal, head of fundamental retail research at SBI Securities, attributed the market slump to multiple factors. He pointed to the surge in Brent crude prices close to $105 a barrel and increasing global bond yields amid inflation worries. He also highlighted the impact of IRDAI's draft norms on commissions paid by insurers, which are a significant revenue source for banks and NBFCs. These developments have collectively pressured Indian equity markets.
Agrawal suggested that the recent rise in oil prices is driven more by narrative than fundamentals and could reverse quickly. A decline of $10 to $20 in crude prices might improve market sentiment and ease some of the selling pressure.
The India Vix, a measure of market volatility and investor anxiety, surged by 22.8 percent to close at 12.7, signaling heightened caution among traders and investors.
From a technical perspective, Chandan Taparia, head of technical and derivatives research at Motilal Oswal Financial Services, noted that the Nifty has been forming a pattern of lower highs and lower lows over the past seven weeks, resulting in a cumulative decline of about 1,700 points. He cautioned that as long as the index remains below 23,333, the structure appears weak and could test support levels between 22,888 and 22,500.
Taparia also observed that any short-term rebounds have been met with renewed selling pressure, and the sharp increase in India Vix suggests that volatility and selling interest could persist in the near term.
This market behavior occurs amid broader global uncertainty, with inflation concerns, geopolitical tensions, and monetary policy adjustments influencing investor decisions worldwide. For Indian investors, the developments underscore the sensitivity of financial stocks to regulatory changes and global commodity price trends.
As the market adjusts to these factors, participants will be monitoring crude oil prices and regulatory announcements closely, looking for clues on the direction of India’s equity markets in the weeks ahead.
