Nifty IPO Index Gains 19.5% YTD While Main Market Declines

The Nifty IPO index, which monitors the performance of the latest 100 initial public offerings, has recorded a notable increase of approximately 19.5 per cent since the start of this year. This growth comes amid a challenging environment for the broader market where the Nifty 50 index has declined by around 11.5 per cent year-to-date. Data from the stock exchange also shows that the IPO index rose 2.2 per cent in September alone, even as the Nifty 50 dropped 3.8 per cent during the same month.

This divergence highlights the relative strength of newly listed companies compared to established large-cap stocks. Small and medium enterprises (SMEs) have also delivered solid returns, with the Nifty SME Emerge index gaining 5.55 per cent year-to-date and 4.34 per cent in September. The SME index was the only positive performer over the past week, rising 1.97 per cent, while the Nifty 50 and Nifty IPO index fell by 1.17 per cent and 0.12 per cent respectively in volatile trading conditions.

When looking at the longer term, the IPO index has increased about 13.6 per cent over the last 12 months, outperforming both the SME and broader market benchmarks during this period. The SME Emerge index, however, saw a slight decline of 0.22 per cent in the past year. These figures suggest that investors are currently more interested in companies with growth potential rather than established large firms.

Lenskart Solutions, which holds the largest weight in the Nifty IPO index, saw its stock close down 3.68 per cent at ₹655.2 recently. Despite this recent drop, the company’s shares have appreciated nearly 49.6 per cent since the beginning of the year and gained 3.12 per cent over the past month. However, weekly data reflected a 4.07 per cent decrease, showing some short-term volatility.

Over a six-month span, the Nifty SME Emerge index surged 33.1 per cent and the IPO index rose by 31.62 per cent, while the Nifty 50 declined by 1.41 per cent. These contrasting movements emphasize a market trend favoring emerging companies with promising earnings forecasts over larger, more established entities.

Rishabh Nahar, a partner and fund manager at Qode Advisors, commented on these trends, stating, “The numbers are interesting, but I wouldn’t read them as a broad endorsement of the IPO market just yet. The market isn’t rewarding size right now; it’s rewarding the prospect of growth. The money is moving towards companies where investors believe the next few years of earnings can justify today’s valuations. Whether that turns into a durable trend will ultimately be decided by earnings, not listing-day enthusiasm.”

Among the 81 companies that went public this year, 21 are currently trading below their issue price, according to Prime Database. On the other hand, 10 stocks have delivered returns exceeding 100 per cent, and 18 have posted gains between 20 and 40 per cent. ESDS Software leads the pack with a remarkable 310 per cent increase from its issue price of ₹429, followed by Indo-MIM at 163 per cent and Sedemac at 154 per cent. Conversely, Shree Ram Twistex has underperformed significantly, falling 64 per cent from its ₹104 issue price, with Alpine Texworld and Innovision also posting declines of 53 per cent and 51 per cent respectively.

The Association of Investment Bankers of India’s recent report indicates that mainboard IPOs have raised ₹1.10 trillion through 84 issues so far this year. Notably, the financial services sector’s share of fundraising dropped to 17.9 per cent from 32 per cent in 2023. IPOs in the ₹500 crore to ₹1,000 crore range attracted the highest average subscription rate, at 46.5 times. SME IPOs raised ₹5,810 crore between January and August, with fresh capital accounting for 94 per cent of this amount.

This data reflects a nuanced picture of the Indian IPO market, where investors are increasingly selective, focusing on growth potential and valuation justification rather than simply the size or hype of listings. As the market continues to evolve, the performance of these newly listed firms will be closely watched to assess whether this current trend toward growth-oriented investments sustains itself in the months ahead.
