Malaysia's Vehicle Sales Slip 2% in August 2026 Amid Market Shifts
In August 2026, Malaysia's new vehicle market experienced a slight decrease, with sales dropping 2% compared to the same month last year. The Malaysian Automotive Association (MAA) reported that 71,428 vehicles were registered, down from 73,041 units in August 2025.
This decline followed two months of robust growth, which coincided with a rise in Malaysia’s economic output. Government statistics show that the country’s gross domestic product (GDP) grew by 5.8% year-on-year in the second quarter of 2026, accelerating from 5.4% in the first quarter. This economic momentum had previously supported stronger vehicle sales in June and July.
Despite the August dip, the overall vehicle market in Malaysia expanded during the first eight months of 2026. Total registrations reached 530,478 units, marking a 3% increase from 516,862 units sold in the same period last year. Passenger vehicles largely drove this growth, increasing by 4% to 497,595 units. Conversely, sales of commercial vehicles declined by 14%, falling to 32,883 units.
Production figures for vehicles within Malaysia also showed modest growth. From January to August, total production rose by 1% to 496,985 units, up slightly from 493,716 units in the prior year’s comparable timeframe.
The electric vehicle segment saw notable gains in 2026. Battery electric vehicle (BEV) sales more than doubled to 47,500 units in the first eight months. Proton led the BEV market with 21,840 units sold, followed by BYD-Denza at 7,780 units and Chery with 3,840 units.
Market leader Perodua reported a nearly 5% decline in sales year-to-date, totaling 219,560 units. Its Bezza sedan remained the top-selling model, accounting for 65,697 sales. The company has recently expanded its lineup with the introduction of the Traz compact SUV, based on the Toyota Yaris Cross, as well as its first battery electric vehicle, the QV-E.
Proton posted a significant increase in global sales, climbing 40% to 141,421 units during the first eight months of 2026. This figure includes 6,059 vehicles sold overseas. Proton's Saga model led sales with nearly 60,000 units, followed by the Geely-based X50 compact SUV at 19,910 units and the electric e.Mas 5 at 18,013 units.
Toyota’s sales in Malaysia declined by 9.5% to 72,942 units year-to-date. Despite this drop, models like the Hilux pickup truck and the Vios compact sedan maintained strong demand.
The Malaysian Automotive Association has adjusted its forecast for total vehicle sales in 2026, raising the estimate to 800,000 units from a previous projection of 790,000 units. This revision reflects the stronger-than-expected sales performance in mid-2026.
Looking ahead, market analysts at GlobalData predict a 2% decrease in light vehicle sales for the full year, expecting 813,000 units to be sold, down from a record 827,000 units in 2025. They anticipate a slight further dip to 807,000 units in 2027.
Malaysia’s automotive market remains dynamic, influenced by economic trends, shifting consumer preferences, and the growing adoption of electric vehicles. These factors will continue to shape the sector as it adapts to regional and global developments.
