HDFC Bank Shares Rise as RBI Considers Anup Bagchi for CEO Role
HDFC Bank's stock price surged to Rs 749.30 on Tuesday, hitting its highest level in nearly seven weeks. This gain follows news that the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) is evaluating Anup Bagchi as a potential candidate for the position of Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director of the bank.
Over the last three trading sessions, the bank’s shares have increased by approximately 5 percent, an impressive advance given the broader market’s recent volatility. Two sources familiar with the matter revealed that the RBI has reached out to key industry bodies, including the Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority (IRDA) and ICICI Bank CEO Sandeep Bakhshi, to gather feedback on Bagchi’s suitability for the role.
Bagchi, aged 55, is currently the Managing Director and CEO of ICICI Prudential Life Insurance, a position he has held since 2023. Before joining ICICI Prudential, he served as an executive director at ICICI Bank beginning in 2017. During his tenure there, he managed significant divisions such as wholesale banking, transaction banking, markets, and proprietary trading.
HDFC Bank officially began the leadership succession process last week after submitting two candidates’ names to the RBI. This move follows the announcement that current CEO Sashidhar Jagdishan will retire later this year. The transition comes at a critical moment as the bank seeks to stabilize leadership and reassure investors.
Investor confidence had been shaken earlier this year when former part-time Chairman Atanu Chakraborty resigned in March, citing ethical disagreements with certain bank practices. This development caused a sharp decline in the bank’s share price. However, since then, the stock has gradually regained ground, helped by recent leadership developments.
Analyst sentiment has also turned more positive. UBS recently included HDFC Bank on its 'APAC Key Call List' with a 'Buy' rating and set a price target of Rs 1,000, projecting more than 35 percent upside from the previous close of Rs 739.50. UBS expects the bank’s loan growth to accelerate to 15 percent annually during fiscal years 2027 to 2029. They also foresee cyclical improvements in margins reaching around 3.5 percent and anticipate a Return on Assets (ROA) near 1.9 percent in FY27-28. UBS views the risk-to-reward ratio favorably at 1.4 times for FY28.
Macquarie has maintained its 'Outperform' rating for HDFC Bank with a target price of Rs 1,150, suggesting a potential gain near 56 percent. The firm highlighted the appointment of an external CEO as a pivotal factor that could prompt a re-rating of the stock. Meanwhile, Nomura underscored that bringing in a credible external CEO could offer the bank a fresh strategic direction and long-term clarity. They kept their 'Buy' rating unchanged, with a target of Rs 950, indicating a 28 percent upside. Nomura believes a new leader could reassess the existing strategy, push for improvements in growth, deposits, margins, and returns, and drive a reset of the bank’s priorities.
In the recent past, HDFC Bank’s shares had fallen sharply, reaching a 52-week low of Rs 681.90 on September 11. This marked a decline of over 33 percent from their peak of Rs 1,020.50 in October of the previous year. Despite this significant drop, the stock has managed to claw back approximately 4 percent in the past week.
HDFC Bank is one of India’s largest private sector lenders, known for its extensive retail banking network and strong asset quality. The upcoming CEO appointment is closely watched by investors and analysts as it could influence the bank’s strategic direction and performance in a competitive Indian banking landscape.
