CPCL Q2 Net Profit Jumps to ₹2,271 Crore on Strong Refining Margins
Chennai Petroleum Corporation Ltd (CPCL) recorded a significant surge in its net profit for the quarter ending September 30, 2026, posting ₹2,271 crore compared to ₹732 crore for the same period last year. This remarkable increase was primarily driven by elevated international product prices, robust operational output, and stronger realisation from value-added products.
CPCL’s standalone refinery revenue climbed 10 percent year-over-year, reaching ₹22,109 crore in the second quarter, up from ₹20,069 crore recorded in the corresponding quarter of 2025. A key factor behind the profit jump was the sharp rise in the company’s gross refining margin (GRM), which more than doubled to $20.41 per barrel from $9.04 per barrel a year prior.
H Shankar, Managing Director of CPCL, highlighted the impact of prevailing global prices on the company’s financial results. Speaking to the media in Chennai, he noted, "We benefited from favourable international pricing during this period, which positively influenced our bottom line. The timing aligned well with market conditions, providing a strong boost to our operations."
Despite a planned 40-day maintenance shutdown starting in early September for a major processing unit including the hydrocracker, CPCL maintained high production levels. The hydrocracker is essential for producing middle distillates such as diesel. The shutdown began to affect output in the second week of September, but the company optimized usage of its other processing units before taking the unit offline.
During Q2, CPCL processed 2.590 million tonnes of crude oil, achieving a capacity utilisation rate of 98 percent. For the first half of fiscal year 2027, the refinery processed a total of 5.438 million tonnes with a capacity utilisation of 103 percent, reflecting efficient management and operational resilience. The GRM for the first six months stood at $14.34 per barrel, more than double the $6.17 per barrel recorded in the previous year’s first half.
Another notable development was CPCL’s enhanced crude flexibility. The refinery improved its crude blending capabilities, reducing reliance on specific crude grades especially used in the production of lube oil base stocks (LOBS). Shankar mentioned, "We achieved our highest-ever lube oil base stock production during the first half compared with any previous corresponding period." This diversification was supported by Indian Oil Corporation, CPCL’s parent company, which secured crude supplies from diverse sources including Russia, West Africa, and the Middle East.
CPCL has incorporated new crude grades from Ghana and Nigeria alongside other West African sources, broadening its supply base. This diversification strategy helps the refinery better manage market volatility and enhances product quality. Beyond refining margins, the contribution from specialised products such as hexane, lube oil base stocks, and mineral terpene oil also played a role in improving the company's financial performance.
On the retail front, CPCL currently operates three fuel outlets in and around Chennai, with the Mathur outlet located outside the city performing particularly well. The company intends to expand its retail presence by adding approximately three new outlets in Tamil Nadu during the next quarter, aiming to strengthen its direct consumer reach.
CPCL’s board has approved an interim dividend of ₹25 per equity share with a face value of ₹10 for fiscal year 2027, reflecting confidence in the company’s outlook and commitment to shareholder returns.
CPCL’s recent results underline the importance of operational agility, product diversification, and market timing in the Indian refining sector. As global crude oil markets continue to fluctuate, refineries with flexible crude sourcing and a focus on value-added products tend to perform better financially. CPCL’s achievements this quarter highlight its adaptability and strategic positioning within the competitive energy industry.
