Balrampur Chini Mills Gains 4% After Receiving Rs 75 Crore BioE3 Grant

Shares of Balrampur Chini Mills Limited (BCML) saw a notable increase of 4 percent on Friday, reaching Rs 689 on the NSE. This rise came after the company announced it had secured a Rs 75 crore grant from the Government of India aimed at boosting the country's bioeconomy.

The grant was awarded through the Biotechnology Industry Research Assistance Council (BIRAC), operating under the Department of Biotechnology (DBT). This funding supports the establishment of a 100 tons per annum (TPA) research and development facility focused on polylactic acid (PLA) Co-Polymers. The initiative is part of the government’s flagship BioE3 program, which stands for Biotechnology for Economy, Environment, and Employment.

This financial support is expected to accelerate the development of advanced bio-based materials in India, enhance local biomanufacturing capabilities, and advance the nation's goal of becoming a global leader in the bioeconomy sector. The R&D facility will be located at BCML's integrated manufacturing complex in Kumbhi, Uttar Pradesh. This site is also home to India's first integrated commercial PLA manufacturing plant.

The upcoming pilot-scale R&D center will act as a hub for innovation, focused on creating next-generation PLA grades and Co-polymers. Its capabilities will include rapid product development, technology indigenization, customer validation, and providing a smooth pathway for scaling up to commercial production. Specialized PLA grades and advanced PLA co-polymers developed here will target high-value applications.

Aside from product development, the facility will generate important techno-economic data and acquire process knowledge vital for commercial-scale manufacturing. It will also play a key role in training highly skilled professionals to support the growing biomanufacturing industry in India. Collaboration with industry partners and research institutions will be encouraged to speed up the innovation cycle in sustainable materials.

The facility is designed to bridge the gap between laboratory research and commercial manufacturing. It will support all stages of product development, from gathering customer insights and developing new PLA formulations to producing pilot samples, validating performance, and preparing technologies for full-scale manufacturing. Additionally, the center plans to offer limited services to academic and research institutions to foster a stronger biotechnology innovation ecosystem across India.

Avantika Saraogi, Executive Director of Balrampur Chini Mills, commented on the grant, stating, "The Government of India's support through this ₹75 crore BioE3 grant is a strong endorsement of the strategic role that advanced biomanufacturing will play in India's future. This facility will help build indigenous technology, develop next-generation bio-based materials and create the scientific and technical capabilities required for India to lead the global transition towards sustainable manufacturing." She also expressed gratitude to the Department of Biotechnology and BIRAC for their trust in the company’s vision and highlighted their commitment to contributing to India's rise as a global bioeconomy leader.

The global shift towards bio-based materials and circular manufacturing practices underscores the importance of innovations like BCML’s PLA Co-Polymer R&D facility. It is positioned to enhance India's innovation landscape, speed up the commercialization of advanced biopolymers, and help establish the country as a significant center for sustainable material production.

On the stock market, Balrampur Chini Mills has demonstrated steady growth. Over the past month, its shares have gained 1.37 percent. Since the beginning of the year, the stock has risen approximately 54.52 percent. Over the last year, the share price increased by 42.99 percent, while gains over the past three and five years stand at 53.83 percent and 88.18 percent respectively.

This development comes amid a broader trend of increasing government support for biotechnology and sustainable manufacturing sectors in India, reflecting the country’s ambitions to build a self-reliant and environmentally responsible industrial base.
