AI Sector Drives Strong Bullish Options Activity Amid Market Rally
The stock market witnessed a notable surge on Thursday as technology stocks, particularly those in the artificial intelligence space, attracted a wave of bullish options trading. This activity coincided with the Nasdaq-100 posting its strongest performance in six weeks and the broader S&P 500 Index gaining over 1 percent. Market participants reacted to the Federal Reserve's recent interest rate increase and cautious remarks from AI industry leaders about the need for regulation.
Thursday’s trading session saw the Cboe Volatility Index, commonly known as the VIX, fall by more than two points to 15.4, marking its lowest level in a week. This drop followed a spike in volatility on Wednesday after the Fed raised rates for the first time since 2023. The decline in the VIX signaled reduced market fear and encouraged investors to seek upside opportunities through options.
Options market-makers reported a significant skew in pricing, with at-the-money calls trading at around two dollars more than equivalent puts. This pricing pattern suggests that traders are positioning themselves for further gains in the near term. The enthusiasm was especially pronounced in major technology firms involved with AI and semiconductors.
Intel emerged as a standout in this options frenzy. The chipmaker’s stock price reached levels not seen since July, building on a rally that has pushed its shares up roughly 35 percent from summer lows. Interest in Intel options soared to over 1.3 million contracts traded on Thursday, nearly tripling the monthly average. About 270,000 call options were likely purchased compared to under 140,000 put contracts, reflecting a strong bullish tilt. Data from SpotGamma indicated that buyers initiated approximately $320 million in premium, with $231 million linked to call options. The most actively traded contract was the October 2 expiry with a strike price of 115, implying that the stock needs to climb another 7.7 percent for those options to become profitable.
Intel’s growing appeal comes amid reports that the company is negotiating with SK Hynix to manufacture chips within the United States, a move that could strengthen its supply chain and domestic production capabilities. Such developments are likely fueling investor optimism.
Rival Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) also experienced heightened options trading volumes, almost doubling its average activity. Traders showed a preference for calls, with about 107,000 call contracts bought against 71,500 puts. One notable trade involved the purchase of 1,500 calls with a strike price of 550 expiring in November, valued at $8.3 million, paired with the sale of an equal number of 750-strike calls expiring in June next year. This position would break even if AMD’s stock exceeds $615 by the November expiration, indicating confidence in the company’s medium-term outlook.
Cybersecurity firm Crowdstrike, which has surged around 120 percent over the past year, also attracted bullish options interest. The most popular contract among traders was the 250-strike call expiring this Friday, trading at roughly $2. This option requires a 2 percent increase in the stock price to become profitable, signaling expectations for continued momentum.
SpaceX, one of the standout IPOs this year, saw its stock reach the highest level since early July. Options volume surged to over $1.5 billion in premium traded, with puts comprising about $1.1 billion of that amount. However, data suggests that a substantial portion of this put premium came from a small group of large sellers, including a significant sale of 41,000 puts with a strike price of 205 expiring this Friday, generating more than $200 million in premium. This activity may indicate hedging strategies rather than outright bearish sentiment.
Overall, the options market activity reflects growing investor interest in technology companies that are positioned to benefit from advancements in artificial intelligence and chip manufacturing. The recent Federal Reserve rate hike had initially stirred volatility, but the strong sector-specific enthusiasm is helping to drive market gains. As AI continues to shape various industries, traders appear willing to pay a premium for the chance to capitalize on further upside in leading tech stocks.
This trend fits into a broader market narrative where investors weigh macroeconomic challenges against the transformative potential of technology innovations. For now, the bullish options trades suggest market participants anticipate ongoing strength in AI-related equities despite regulatory concerns voiced by industry leaders.
