Nifty Monthly Expiry and CAS Impact: Key Insights for Tuesday’s Close

Investors should prepare for notable market fluctuations in the latter part of Tuesday’s trading as both weekly and monthly futures and options (F&O) contracts expire. The Nifty derivatives typically reach expiry on the final Tuesday of each month. If this day happens to be a trading holiday, the expiry date is shifted to the prior trading day.

While the expiration of derivatives is a routine event, the introduction of the Closing Auction Session (CAS) adds a new dynamic that traders need to understand. CAS was implemented on August 3 this year and has since been linked to unexpected price swings and increased uncertainty in market behavior. This prompted the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) to propose adjustments to how derivatives contracts are settled.

On the expiry day of August’s F&O series, the Nifty index experienced a surge in the final minutes of trading. It rallied nearly 1 percent from the day’s low and closed about 0.5 percent above the previous session’s close, highlighting the potential influence of CAS on price movements during expiry.

Understanding the Closing Auction Session and SEBI’s Recommendations

SEBI introduced the CAS to enhance the transparency of price discovery in the stock market. The auction runs every trading day from 3:15 PM to 3:35 PM, immediately following the normal market close at 3:15 PM. During this 20-minute interval, traders can submit market and limit orders that contribute to determining the official closing prices of eligible stocks.

A unique feature of CAS is the random cutoff for order entry, which occurs between 3:28 PM and 3:30 PM. This random timing is designed to reduce the risk of manipulation by preventing participants from timing their orders precisely at the close. While the cash market auction ends at 3:35 PM, equity derivatives trading continues till 3:40 PM. Subsequently, a post-close session runs from 3:50 PM to 4:00 PM where shares can only be traded at the closing prices established by the auction.

Despite these mechanisms, the new closing process has introduced sharp volatility in key indices during the final minutes of trading. In response, SEBI released a consultation paper on September 12 proposing that expiry-day settlement prices for index and stock derivatives be calculated using a blended volume-weighted average price (VWAP). This VWAP would combine data from the last 30 minutes of continuous trading and the first 10 minutes of the CAS, aiming to smooth out extreme price swings.

Why the Last 30 Minutes of Trading Are Crucial on Expiry Days

Tuesday’s session is particularly important because the market faces the simultaneous expiry of both weekly and monthly contracts. This event often triggers significant position adjustments and rollovers, which can increase volatility as traders finalize their holdings.

Technical analyst Hitesh Tailor of Choice Broking highlighted that CAS can amplify price movements in the closing minutes, making the final closing price a key technical indicator. Tailor identified the 22,500 level on the Nifty as an essential support zone for any short-term rebound. If the index holds above this mark, a recovery toward the 22,800 to 23,000 range may be possible. Conversely, a clear break below 22,500 could weaken market sentiment and potentially drag the index down toward 22,182 to 22,100.

On the resistance front, 23,000 has become a significant barrier. This level previously served as strong support around the June 2026 swing low, so its role as resistance now will be closely watched. Tailor emphasized that the trading activity and closing levels in the last half hour will provide important clues for the near-term market trajectory.

Ajit Mishra, Senior Vice President of Research at Religare Broking, also expects heightened volatility in Tuesday’s latter session, given the importance of this expiry. Mishra suggested the immediate support at 22,600 following recent declines, noting that upside gains may be limited by resistance near 23,000.

Market Context and Investor Considerations

Expiry days in the derivatives market are known for increased activity as traders adjust or roll over positions to the next contract period. These movements can lead to sudden price swings, which are now further influenced by the CAS mechanism. While CAS aims to improve price transparency, it has introduced elements that complicate the usual expiry dynamics.

Investors should be cautious and monitor key technical levels closely during this period. Market conditions can change rapidly, especially in the final moments of trading. Consulting with certified financial advisors before making trading decisions is advisable given the complexity and risks involved.

As the market adapts to this relatively new auction process, ongoing regulatory adjustments such as SEBI’s proposed blended VWAP method may help stabilize price discovery on expiry days.
