ASML Holding NV, the Dutch semiconductor equipment giant, revealed on Wednesday that several of its clients are showing interest in placing orders for its essential lithography machines well into 2029 and 2030. This announcement accompanied the company's third-quarter financial results, which exceeded market expectations and offered insight into the sustained demand for its technology.

Christophe Fouquet, ASML's CEO, highlighted that customers have been revising their short- and medium-term equipment demand projections upward. He attributed this trend primarily to the expanding investments in artificial intelligence (AI) technologies. "Our customers continue to increase their short- and medium-term equipment demand forecasts with us, driven primarily by their views on the size and duration of AI-related investments," Fouquet said in the company’s press release. He added that some clients are already expressing interest in orders stretching as far as 2029 and 2030.

ASML holds a unique position in the semiconductor manufacturing industry as the sole producer of extreme ultraviolet (EUV) lithography systems. These machines are crucial for fabricating the most advanced chips, used by major foundries such as Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC). Investors monitor ASML closely for indicators of AI-driven chip demand because the development of AI applications requires ever more sophisticated semiconductors.

Fouquet also noted that the company’s production capacity planned for 2027 and 2028 will not fully satisfy customer demand. ASML is exploring options to expand its 2028 production capacity beyond a previously announced 30 percent increase. This capacity enhancement reflects the growing needs of the semiconductor industry, driven by AI and other technology trends.

During the quarter, Samsung Electronics and TSMC committed to acquiring ASML’s next-generation High Numerical Aperture (High NA) EUV machines. These advanced tools are seen as critical for the company’s future expansion, enabling the production of chips with even smaller features and higher performance.

The strong demand for ASML’s equipment has encouraged the company to revise its financial outlook. In July, ASML raised its sales and gross margin expectations for the year. Its shares have gained 56 percent so far in 2025, reflecting investor confidence.

On Wednesday, ASML narrowed its full-year net sales forecast to a range between 44 billion euros and 45 billion euros (approximately $49.3 billion to $50.4 billion). The previous forecast started at 43 billion euros. For the fourth quarter, the company expects net sales between 14.2 billion euros and 15.2 billion euros, with the upper end exceeding consensus estimates of 14.2 billion euros.

Reporting third-quarter results, ASML posted net sales of 11.66 billion euros, slightly below the consensus estimate of 11.72 billion euros. However, its net profit reached 4.96 billion euros, well above the expected 4.1 billion euros.

Regarding its business in China, ASML maintained its forecast that sales to the country will represent about 20 percent of total revenue. The company faces certain restrictions in China, limiting its ability to sell EUV and some deep ultraviolet lithography (DUV) equipment there due to regulatory controls.

While ASML dominates the market for both EUV and DUV machines, recent reports suggested a Chinese company has begun producing an immersion DUV lithography system. This development is notable because China has been intensifying efforts to build a self-sufficient semiconductor supply chain. However, analysts remain skeptical about the technical challenges China faces in matching ASML’s advanced technology.

The semiconductor sector remains a critical part of the global technology landscape, with demand driven by AI, 5G, automotive electronics, and more. ASML’s ability to meet growing demand through 2030 will play a significant role in shaping the supply of cutting-edge chips worldwide.
