Adani Power Starts Construction on 3.2GW Thermal Plant in Assam
Adani Power has officially commenced construction of a major 3.2 gigawatt (GW) ultra-supercritical thermal power facility in Chapar, located in the Dhubri district of Assam, India. This project signals a significant step in expanding the region's energy infrastructure and is backed by a substantial investment estimated at $5 billion (approximately Rs480 billion).
The foundation stone for the plant was laid in a ceremony led by Assam's Chief Minister, Himanta Biswa Sarma. Alongside government officials and representatives from local industry and communities, Jeet Adani, a director of the Adani Group, also participated in the event, highlighting the company's commitment to the region's development.
Set to be commissioned in phases starting December 2030, the Chapar power plant will consist of four units, each with a capacity of 800 megawatts (MW). These units will utilize ultra-supercritical technology, known for its higher efficiency and reduced emissions compared to traditional coal-fired plants. The facility will also incorporate advanced environmental controls to minimize its ecological footprint.
During the construction phase, the project is expected to generate approximately 20,000 jobs, providing employment opportunities to local workers and contractors. Once operational, it will sustain around 5,000 permanent jobs. This workforce expansion is likely to have a positive ripple effect on the local economy.
The new power plant aims to strengthen Assam's electricity generation capacity, addressing the growing demand from households, businesses, and industries. Reliable and affordable power supply will be critical in supporting the state’s economic growth and industrial development.
Adani Power secured the rights to develop this facility after winning a competitive bidding process in October 2025. The company received the official letter of award from the Assam Power Distribution Company in November of the same year, formalizing the agreement.
Jeet Adani stated, "Today marks the beginning of an important new chapter for Assam. Adani Power will invest Rs480 billion in this 3.2GW thermal power project, bringing reliable and affordable electricity to support homes, businesses and industries. The project will also create jobs and open up opportunities for local contractors, suppliers and businesses. We are proud to invest in Assam and be part of the state's economic growth."
This project forms part of the broader strategy by the Adani Group to deepen its footprint in Assam’s power sector. To date, the conglomerate has invested over Rs800 billion in Assam across various industries including power generation, aviation, and cement production. Within the energy sector alone, the group plans to invest Rs630 billion, with part of this amount supporting two pumped storage plants totaling 2.7GW capacity through its subsidiary Adani Green Energy.
Additionally, Adani Energy Solutions is engaged in modernizing Assam’s power distribution network by implementing smart metering projects, which aim to improve efficiency and reduce losses in the electricity supply system.
Beyond Assam, Adani Power continues to expand its presence across India. In March 2026, it secured a long-term power supply agreement with the Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Company for 1.6GW of capacity, further illustrating the company’s growing role in India’s energy market.
The launch of the Chapar thermal plant project represents a significant investment in Assam’s future energy needs. By integrating cutting-edge technology and fostering economic opportunities, Adani Power is contributing to the region’s infrastructural advancement and energy self-sufficiency.
