Great Eastern Shipping Shares Rise 3% as Nomura Maintains Buy Rating

Shares of Great Eastern Shipping climbed nearly 3 percent on Monday following Nomura's decision to uphold its Buy rating on the stock and assign a target price of Rs 1,965. This target suggests a potential upside of about 28 percent from current trading levels.

Nomura's positive outlook is grounded not just in the present shipping market cycle, but also in Great Eastern Shipping's solid financial footing. The brokerage highlighted the company's net cash reserves, which stood around Rs 8,000 crore as of the first quarter of fiscal year 2027, as a significant strategic advantage. This strong cash position enables the company to pursue fleet expansion opportunities, especially when vessel prices decline during industry downturns.

Great Eastern Shipping has a track record of conservative capital management, relying heavily on internally generated funds for growth rather than raising equity capital—a practice the company has maintained for over 30 years. Nomura emphasized that this prudent approach provides the company with the flexibility to acquire ships swiftly if market conditions become favorable.

The brokerage projects that the company’s fleet, currently comprising about 40 vessels, could grow to 62 by fiscal year 2029. This expansion is expected to include additions across crude oil tankers, product carriers, and dry bulk vessels. Acquiring ships during a market downturn could allow Great Eastern Shipping to increase its scale without exerting undue pressure on its balance sheet.

While the shipping industry faces challenges, such as anticipated declines in crude and long-range tanker freight rates in fiscal 2028 due to trade normalization and an influx of new vessels, Nomura believes the company's fleet growth will help mitigate earnings pressure. Furthermore, Great Eastern Shipping’s exposure to diverse segments like liquefied petroleum gas (LPG), dry bulk cargo, and offshore business activities adds to its resilience.

Given the cyclical nature of the shipping sector, Nomura values the company based on its net asset value rather than earnings multiples. Their Rs 1,965 price target is derived from applying a 0.75 multiple to the estimated ex-cash net asset value for September 2028, plus the company’s net cash. Compared to the stock price of Rs 1,540.90 on Monday, this valuation implies roughly 28 percent upside potential.

In addition to fleet expansion plans, Great Eastern Shipping has announced a buyback program for 5.9 million shares, representing approximately 4 percent of its outstanding shares, at a maximum price of Rs 1,530 per share. Nomura pointed out that the company’s preference for maintaining a strong cash reserve aligns with its strategy to invest in vessels when the shipping market cycle turns favorable.

On Monday afternoon, Great Eastern Shipping shares were trading at Rs 1,540.90, reflecting a 2.93 percent increase. The stock has appreciated 3.79 percent over the past week and nearly 55 percent in the last year, indicating strong investor confidence.

The shipping industry plays a crucial role in global trade and economic activity, transporting a large share of the world’s goods across oceans. Companies like Great Eastern Shipping with substantial cash reserves and a strategic approach to fleet management are often better positioned to navigate the sector’s cyclical fluctuations. Their ability to invest during downturns can provide a competitive edge when market conditions improve.

Investors monitoring the shipping sector may find Great Eastern Shipping’s approach noteworthy, given its balance sheet strength and clear growth plans amidst an environment of fluctuating freight rates. Nomura’s optimism reflects confidence in the company’s capacity to capitalize on opportunities that arise from shifts in the shipping cycle.
