Indian Markets Set for Gains as GIFT Nifty Points Upward Despite Global Concerns

Indian stock markets are positioned for a positive opening on Friday, with the GIFT Nifty index trading higher by 51.5 points, or 0.22 percent, at 23,149. This suggests that Dalal Street could recover from the sharp losses seen in the previous session, despite ongoing global uncertainties and elevated crude oil prices that continue to weigh on investor sentiment.

The benchmark Nifty index experienced a notable decline of 1.6 percent on Thursday, marking its steepest drop since early July. Market analysts attribute this weakness to a complex mix of geopolitical tensions, especially the unresolved conflict between the US and Iran, persistently high crude oil prices, and rising global bond yields. These factors have collectively contributed to increased risk aversion among investors.

Geopolitical concerns intensified after US President Donald Trump indicated that any potential agreement with Iran might only materialize after the US midterm elections in November. Meanwhile, renewed military activity by Houthi rebels near the Red Sea and heightened tensions involving Saudi Arabia have added to worries about disruptions to global oil supply chains, further fueling inflationary pressures worldwide.

In the domestic market, foreign portfolio investors (FPIs) were net sellers, offloading shares worth Rs 5,027 crore on Thursday. Conversely, domestic institutional investors (DIIs) acquired shares worth Rs 4,201 crore, reflecting a cautious but supportive stance amid volatile conditions. The Indian rupee also suffered, weakening by 23 paise to close at 95.96 against the US dollar, impacted by the stronger dollar and surging crude prices.

Technical analysis of the Nifty index reveals a bearish Relative Strength Index (RSI), indicating negative momentum. The immediate support level is identified at 23,000, with a further downside risk towards 22,700 if this level is breached. On the upside, resistance is seen near 23,200, which the index will need to surpass to signal a more sustained recovery.

Market fear, as measured by the India VIX, rose by 23 percent to 12.69, highlighting increased investor anxiety. This heightened volatility aligns with broader global trends, where Asian equities experienced mixed movements. Japan’s Topix index edged up by 0.6 percent, while Australia’s S&P/ASX 200 declined by 0.6 percent. Futures markets reflected similar uncertainty, with the S&P 500 futures down 0.2 percent and Hang Seng futures falling 0.3 percent.

US stocks closed mostly flat on Thursday. The S&P 500 saw slight declines, influenced by mixed earnings from major companies like Microsoft and Meta Platforms. However, a Reuters report suggesting that US and Iranian negotiators are exploring a phased approach to de-escalate conflict provided some relief, with talks focusing on Iran reopening the Strait of Hormuz and the US lifting certain economic sanctions.

Commodity markets also mirrored the cautious mood. Gold prices dipped amid a stronger US dollar and expectations that the Federal Reserve will maintain higher interest rates for an extended period to combat inflation. Oil prices eased slightly following a week of sharp increases, as markets balanced the potential for a US-Iran truce against recent attacks on Saudi Arabia by Houthi rebels.

The US dollar’s rally gained momentum due to robust US economic data, a hawkish Federal Reserve stance, and rising Treasury yields. This trend poses challenges for emerging market currencies, including the Indian rupee, which remains vulnerable to global shifts in investor sentiment.

Investors should also note that certain securities, including SAIL, Manappuram, Kaynes, and LIC Housing Finance, are under the Futures & Options ban today due to exceeding 95 percent of market-wide position limits. This regulatory measure aims to curb excessive speculation and maintain orderly markets.

In summary, while the Indian equity market shows signs of a modest rebound as indicated by the GIFT Nifty, underlying global geopolitical tensions, commodity price volatility, and rising bond yields continue to create headwinds. Market participants are advised to monitor developments closely and approach investments with caution in this unsettled environment.
