BEML Wins Major High-Speed Train Contract, Boosts Production and R&D
BEML Limited has secured a landmark contract to supply and maintain B28 high-speed trainsets for the Mumbai-Ahmedabad high-speed rail corridor. These trainsets are engineered to operate at speeds reaching 280 kilometers per hour, marking BEML's entry into the high-speed rail sector, which extends beyond its traditional focus on metro and conventional railway coaches.
This contract is a significant milestone for BEML, as it represents the company's first foray into high-speed rail technology. The Mumbai-Ahmedabad corridor is one of India's flagship infrastructure projects, aiming to introduce bullet train services that will drastically cut travel time between the two cities. BEML's involvement underscores the growing domestic capability in producing advanced rail systems.
To meet the demands of this high-profile project, BEML is actively expanding its production capacity. In April, the company inaugurated a dedicated high-speed rail manufacturing facility in Bengaluru. Additionally, it is developing a new plant in Raisen, Madhya Pradesh, which will focus on rail and metro coach production, with operations expected to commence by mid-2027. These investments reflect BEML's commitment to scaling up its manufacturing footprint in line with emerging market needs.
Reducing reliance on imported components has been a priority for BEML in recent years. The company increased its research and development budget by 150 percent year-over-year, allocating ₹251 crore in fiscal year 2026. This amount represents a rise in R&D spending from 2.6 percent of revenue in FY25 to 6.2 percent in FY26. BEML plans to sustain this elevated investment level, targeting R&D expenditure between 6 and 7 percent of revenue over the next five years. Such focus on innovation and product development is critical to competing effectively in the high-speed rail market.
Financially, BEML anticipates a 20 percent increase in revenue for fiscal year 2027, alongside an EBITDA margin of 13 percent. This projection follows an 8 percent revenue growth in FY26, although the EBITDA margin was limited to 6.2 percent due to one-time costs and an unfavorable mix of products during that period. The company’s first quarter results for FY27 showed a 29 percent year-on-year revenue rise to ₹820 crore. EBITDA turned positive at ₹2.1 crore, recovering from a ₹48 crore loss in the same quarter the previous year.
Elara Securities (India) highlighted that this positive EBITDA for Q1 FY27 was BEML’s first profitable quarter in terms of EBITDA in 15 years. This improvement was attributed to better operational efficiency and stronger execution. Following these financial gains, BEML’s share price has climbed about 55 percent from its 52-week low of ₹1,355 recorded on March 30. Currently, the stock trades at a price-to-earnings ratio of approximately 42 times estimated earnings for FY27, according to Bloomberg data.
Looking ahead, Antique Stock Broking projects a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 19 percent in BEML’s revenues from FY26 to FY29. Earnings are expected to grow even faster, at a 60 percent CAGR, although this is from a relatively low base in FY26. The company’s ability to maintain momentum will largely depend on the speed at which it executes ongoing projects and improves profit margins.
BEML’s recent achievements position it as a rising player in India’s expanding rail infrastructure landscape. High-speed rail is becoming a strategic priority for the country, and domestic manufacturers like BEML are gaining prominence by contributing to critical projects. Continued investments in production capacity and innovation will be vital as India pushes to modernize its transportation systems and reduce reliance on imports.
