Record Options Trading Surges on BlackRock Treasury ETFs Amid Rising Yields
Recent market activity has seen a significant surge in options trading linked to fixed-income exchange-traded funds (ETFs), particularly those managed by BlackRock Inc. Investors are responding to the sharp rise in yields on 10-year and 30-year U.S. Treasury bonds, which have reached levels not seen in over 20 years. This environment has prompted portfolio managers and traders to seek new ways to manage risk and capitalize on shifting bond markets.
The iShares 20 Year Treasury Bond ETF (ticker symbol TLT), one of BlackRock’s flagship fixed-income funds, has experienced an unprecedented rise in options volume. The 20-day average of options traded on TLT recently hit an all-time high for the ETF. Additionally, the total open interest—representing outstanding contracts held by investors—has more than doubled compared to a year ago. It now approaches the record level of 13.55 million contracts, a benchmark reached just before the monthly options expiration last week.
This uptick in activity is driven largely by the volatility in bond yields. As yields climb, price fluctuations in Treasury bonds become more pronounced, increasing the cost and appeal of options contracts. The implied volatility on TLT options, along with the premium investors pay for bearish put options, has surged to levels not seen since late March. Market participants are willing to pay higher premiums either to shield portfolios from further losses or to speculate on continued yield increases.
Steve Laipply, who oversees BlackRock’s iShares Fixed Income ETFs as global co-head, noted, "We’re currently seeing some of the highest trading volumes in Treasuries, investment-grade, and high-yield ETFs. Options on those exposures are becoming increasingly popular because they provide access to exposures that would be difficult to replicate efficiently in the underlying bond market." His comments highlight a growing trend where options serve as a more accessible tool for managing risks inherent in the fixed-income space.
Institutional investors have long used derivatives such as swaps and futures to navigate bond market shifts, but the recent jump in ETF options volume suggests that these instruments are gaining traction among a wider range of market participants. Retail investors, in particular, appear to be engaging more actively with these options. For example, on Moomoo, a digital brokerage platform owned by Futu Holdings, there was a notable increase last week in the purchase of options betting on further declines in TLT prices, which correspond to rising yields. Neil McDonald, CEO of Moomoo US, explained in an email that clients are "signaling expectations that bond yields would continue to rise." This activity reflects a growing retail interest in tactical fixed-income strategies.
Besides providing direct exposure to Treasury yields, ETFs also offer equity fund managers a practical means to hedge interest rate risk without straying from their mandates. Since ETFs trade like stocks, their share prices fluctuate based on the underlying bonds’ value, allowing equity-focused investors to indirectly manage fixed-income exposure within their portfolios.
Alex Kosoglyadov, head of flow equity derivative sales at Nomura Holdings, observed the crossover between equity and fixed-income markets. "We’re definitely seeing investors that are traditionally more focused in the equity world extend their focus into what’s going on in the rates market," he said. According to Kosoglyadov, investors who previously concentrated solely on equity volatility are now increasingly exploring rate products, signaling a broader diversification trend in investor behavior.
As Treasury yields continue to climb and volatility remains elevated, the surge in options trading on BlackRock’s fixed-income ETFs underscores the evolving strategies investors employ to address changing market conditions. These developments highlight the growing importance of ETF options as versatile tools for both hedging and speculation in the current environment.
