Coal India and Eternal Rally as Tata Consumer and Nestle Slip on Nifty, Sensex
Indian equity markets retreated on Tuesday, September 22, as selling pressure intensified in the final trading moments. Both key indices, the BSE Sensex and NSE Nifty50, ended the day with losses after initially holding gains earlier in the session.
The Nifty50 index closed at 23,329 points, down by 85.30 points or 0.36 percent. The Sensex followed a similar trajectory, slipping 329.91 points or 0.44 percent to finish at 74,529.08. Despite some intraday recovery sparked by easing crude oil prices, benchmarks were unable to sustain positive momentum.
Brent crude oil prices dropped below the psychological $100 per barrel level, which offered temporary relief to investors by reducing cost concerns for energy-dependent sectors. However, the broader market sentiment remained cautious, leading to a subdued finish.
Among sectoral indices, the Nifty IT segment experienced a decline of nearly 0.9 percent, reflecting pressure on technology stocks. Conversely, the Nifty Realty index managed to gain approximately 0.9 percent, indicating selective buying interest in real estate shares.
Market breadth on the NSE was tilted toward declines, with 1,868 stocks falling against 1,679 advancing, while 123 remained unchanged. This distribution highlights a cautious market environment with more sellers than buyers by the close.
Top performers on the Nifty included Coal India and Eternal, both registering gains that helped offset some of the day’s losses. InterGlobe also featured among the leading gainers, benefiting from sector-specific factors or positive investor sentiment.
On the downside, Tata Consumer Products and Nestle India were among the biggest laggards on the indices. Bajaj Finserv also saw notable declines, contributing to the overall negative tone. These losses could be linked to profit-booking or sectoral pressures affecting consumer goods and financial services stocks.
Midcap and smallcap segments mirrored the cautious mood, with the Nifty Smallcap 100 index closing 0.23 percent lower and the Nifty Midcap 100 down by 0.08 percent. The relatively modest declines in these indices suggest some resilience but a lack of strong buying interest.
Technical analysis points to immediate resistance for the Nifty50 in the 23,400 to 23,500 range, according to Ponmudi R, CEO of Enrich Money. On the downside, support is seen around the 23,300 point level, with a further drop exposing the index to the 23,200 zone. A break below 23,300 could increase selling pressure, signaling a potential shift in short-term momentum.
Ponmudi noted that technical indicators remain cautious. The Relative Strength Index (RSI) stands weak in the mid-30s, indicating limited upward momentum. Meanwhile, the Moving Average Convergence Divergence (MACD) histogram shows some easing in selling pressure but remains in a negative zone, suggesting continued caution among traders.
This market environment reflects ongoing uncertainty amid global economic concerns and fluctuating commodity prices. Investors often watch crude oil closely due to its impact on inflation and corporate earnings, making its recent dip a key factor in market movements.
Despite the day’s losses, certain sectors and stocks still attracted buying interest, highlighting the selective nature of the market. Real estate companies showed strength, possibly driven by improved sentiment or sector-specific developments. Meanwhile, technology stocks faced profit-taking or sector rotation.
Looking ahead, market participants will likely monitor global cues, corporate earnings, and macroeconomic indicators to gauge the direction of Indian equities. The interplay of these factors will influence whether the benchmarks can regain strength or remain under pressure in the near term.
