IGL to Provide Piped Natural Gas to 22 Northern Railway Sites in Delhi-NCR

Indraprastha Gas Ltd (IGL), a leading city gas distributor in Delhi-NCR, has entered into an agreement with the Delhi Division of Northern Railway to supply piped natural gas (PNG) to 22 railway establishments across the region. This move is part of the ongoing government initiative, PNG Drive 3.0, aimed at replacing traditional fuels with cleaner, more efficient natural gas sources.

The contract will initially cover a daily supply of approximately 3,000 standard cubic metres of natural gas. This quantity is expected to substitute nearly 500 kilograms of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) and around 2,500 litres of diesel each day. By transitioning to PNG, the railway facilities anticipate significant environmental and operational benefits.

The conversion plan includes various railway properties such as mechanised laundries, officers' rest houses, base kitchens, running rooms, subordinate rest houses, and lobbies for guards and ticket examiners. These sites are spread across Delhi, Ghaziabad, and Gautam Buddha Nagar, ensuring a wide coverage of the Delhi-NCR area.

Specifically, mechanised laundries located at key railway stations including Delhi Sarai Rohilla, Old Delhi, Anand Vihar Terminal, Hazrat Nizamuddin, and New Delhi will utilize PNG primarily for boiler operations. This shift is expected to improve energy efficiency in these facilities, which play a crucial role in maintaining the cleanliness and hygiene standards of railway linen and uniforms.

IGL anticipates an increase in natural gas consumption as the initiative progresses and more establishments switch from LPG and diesel to PNG. The switch aligns with broader efforts to reduce carbon emissions and promote sustainable energy usage within the Indian Railways network.

Delhi-NCR’s urban transport and infrastructure sectors are increasingly focusing on cleaner fuel alternatives. Natural gas, being a lower-emission fuel compared to diesel and LPG, offers a viable option for reducing pollution while ensuring reliable energy supply. The Indian Railways, one of the world’s largest rail networks, has been actively exploring such alternatives to enhance environmental sustainability and operational cost-effectiveness.

The PNG Drive 3.0 scheme under the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas supports these transitions across various sectors by encouraging the adoption of piped natural gas. This initiative not only contributes to lowering the carbon footprint but also helps institutions reduce dependency on conventional fossil fuels, which often involve logistics and storage challenges.

By partnering with Northern Railway, IGL extends its reach within the public sector and demonstrates the practical benefits of natural gas in large-scale operations. This collaboration also highlights the growing trend among government departments to incorporate cleaner energy solutions consistent with India’s national goals for energy security and environmental protection.

With the implementation of this agreement, Delhi-NCR’s railway establishments are poised to benefit from a cleaner, more sustainable fuel source that can support their daily energy needs efficiently. The move serves as a model for other sectors and regions looking to adopt piped natural gas as a reliable alternative to traditional fuels.

Overall, the IGL-Northern Railway partnership marks a significant step towards greener energy adoption in one of India’s busiest metropolitan regions. As PNG consumption rises and more facilities convert, this initiative will contribute positively to both operational efficiencies and the environment.
