Bonanza Portfolio CIO Shares Insights on Equity Strategy and Top Sectors

Achin Goel, CFA, Chief Investment Officer and Fund Manager at Bonanza Portfolio, offers a cautious yet optimistic perspective on the current equity market landscape. Speaking in an interview with Mint, Goel emphasized that while the market remains challenging, there are selective pockets of value across certain sectors. His approach underscores the importance of focusing on companies with strong earnings visibility, solid balance sheets, and robust execution capabilities rather than relying on broad market trends.

After enduring a two-year period of market decline, Goel notes that value is indeed starting to emerge, though it is not uniformly distributed. He advises investors to avoid fixating on a single "normal" price-to-earnings (P/E) ratio as the market’s direction will depend heavily on factors such as crude oil prices, geopolitical developments, global interest rates, trade uncertainties, and corporate earnings performances.

Currently, Goel identifies promising investment opportunities in sectors like pharmaceuticals, precision engineering, select areas within defence, and financial services—specifically certain public sector banks and well-capitalized mid-sized private banks. These areas offer a potential for sustainable growth and resilience amid economic fluctuations.

When asked about where investors can find opportunities, Goel points to structural themes rather than broad index plays. He highlights precision engineering, defence and aerospace manufacturing, power transmission and electrical equipment, electronics manufacturing, and data-centre infrastructure as sectors with long-term demand supported by government initiatives such as localization, import substitution, capacity expansion, and increased export activity.

However, he cautions that valuations in some of these sectors already factor in significant growth expectations. Therefore, investors should prioritize companies with high-quality order books, strong returns on capital, efficient cash-flow conversion, and consistent execution rather than chasing momentum alone.

With the global interest rate hike cycle underway and geopolitical tensions in West Asia persisting, Goel advises against indiscriminately reducing equity exposure. Instead, he favors maintaining investments in sectors demonstrating resilience while rebalancing away from those with stretched valuations. He stresses that portfolio discipline and risk management are more crucial at this juncture than making sweeping market calls.

Despite India’s resilient economic growth in the first quarter of fiscal 2027, equity markets have not mirrored this strength. Goel explains that markets reflect expectations about future earnings, liquidity conditions, and capital costs rather than current GDP growth alone. Additional pressures such as foreign institutional selling, elevated crude oil prices, rupee depreciation, rising global bond yields, and renewed tightening in US monetary policy are weighing on investor sentiment.

Goel also notes a divergence within the market, where mid-cap and small-cap companies aligned with higher-growth themes have generally outperformed some large-cap heavyweights that dominate the indexes. The main challenges facing markets include external liquidity constraints, energy costs, currency fluctuations, and geopolitical risks rather than any fundamental weakening of India’s domestic growth story.

Regarding investment strategy, Goel recommends keeping large-cap stocks as the core portfolio holding due to their liquidity, stronger balance sheets, and relatively more attractive valuations following recent corrections. He does not support broad index buying and suggests that mid-cap investments require careful bottom-up selection with attention to valuation. Small-cap positions should be approached with strict discipline concerning position sizes and liquidity, given the higher volatility and disparity between winners and losers in this segment.

Ultimately, Goel advises against making broad-brush decisions favoring large, mid, or small caps. Instead, investors should focus on companies where earnings growth, cash flow generation, and return metrics justify the investment price.

On the topic of fund switching and portfolio rebalancing, Goel recommends using these tools to manage risk rather than chasing past performance. Rebalancing should restore the portfolio to its intended asset allocation after market movements, while fund switches should occur only if the original investment thesis weakens due to factors such as underperformance, changes in fund management, or deteriorating risk-adjusted returns. This approach promotes disciplined portfolio management over frequent trading.

Bonanza Portfolio’s investment philosophy, as outlined by Goel, reflects a pragmatic view of the current market environment. Investors are encouraged to remain selective, emphasize quality and execution, and maintain portfolio discipline amid external uncertainties. These insights come at a time when global markets face multiple headwinds, making careful stock and sector selection critical to navigating the evolving investment landscape.
